Which flowers should I buy?

A bouquet as a thank you, a bouquet of flowers to apologize, a floral arrangement, just to make someone happy, as a congratulations or to wish them a speedy recovery - flowers are suitable for all occasions.

However, if you are careless when making your selection, you may run the risk of putting your foot in it.

Reduce the importance of the language of flowers
For less familiar people, make bouquets from a variety of flowers. This reduces or even eliminates the importance of individual flowers and reduces the risk of completely missing the mark.

Simple or extravagant
Not only should the type of flower suit the occasion, the size of the gift is also important, which is of course also determined by the price. A huge bouquet as a gift for an invitation seems excessive. Even as a small thank you, apology or I just want to give joy - a huge bouquet goes way beyond the scope. For an 80th birthday, however, a little more is appropriate. Therefore, the same applies to flower gifts as to all other gifts: the rarer the occasion, the more elaborate the bouquet can be without seeming excessive.

Roses also become commercially viable in mixed bouquets. Only the red roses (even individually in the bouquet) retain their expressiveness!

Number of flowers
The fact that the number of flowers must be odd is an old rule. This had to do with the completely different tying techniques used at the time, which made it easier to arrange the styles. Today's creative floristry, however, offers many interesting possibilities to create something decorative even with an even number of flowers.

When choosing a bouquet of flowers, it is best to consider the taste of the person you are giving the gift to, if possible.

What color

Strong or pastel
Subtle colour combinations are more advisable than very colourful bouquets or those in one but very strong colour (pure red and white bouquets).

In addition to the type of flower, the color of the flower also plays an important role. In order not to send an unintended message, you can design the bouquet so that several colors appear in similar shades.

  • Red: expresses love and passion, the darker, the stronger the feelings.
    => for partner / lover / spouse
  • Pink: represents youth and gratitude.
    => for friends / neighbours / colleagues
  • Orange: symbolizes loyal friendship and promotions.
    => for friends / employees / colleagues
  • White*: is the symbol of purity and innocence, but also farewell
    => for brides / mourners / newborns
  • Yellow: is the color of vitality, friendship and cheerfulness, gives joy, energy and good mood
    => for friends / neighbours / colleagues
  • Purple: is the expression of uniqueness, appreciation, mysticism, comfort and romance
    => for curious people / friends / mourners
  • Light blue: represents freedom, hope, dreams and peace.
    => for new beginnings / longing / stressed
  • Dark blue: for loyalty, constancy and longing.
    => for new beginnings / longing / stressed
  • Black: symbolizes mysticism, passive energy and grief through loss
    => for mourners

*Be careful with white flowers and bouquets - Many people, especially the older generation, are convinced that white flowers belong on the grave. Younger people are not immune to this symbolic thinking either. White lilies, callas, hydrangeas, asters, chrysanthemums and carnations in particular are still considered cemetery flowers by many and do not always arouse joy.

Flowers for allergy sufferers?

Allergies are very individual and it is best to ask the person you are giving the gift to if they have any allergies. However, as a rule, reactions to the following cut flowers are very rare:

  • Roses
  • Orchids
  • Daffodils
  • Lilies
  • Dahlias
  • iris
  • Anthurium
  • Hydrangeas

Fragrant flowers?

If you are very sensitive to scents, you should avoid the following flowers:

  • lavender
  • jasmine
  • Scented roses
  • lilac
  • Fragrant lilies

Price/quality?

To ensure the quality of the flowers and thus their longest possible lifespan, we recommend buying flowers from specialist shops or their online shops. Flowers should always be given as a gift when they are fresh. To ensure that the bouquet retains its shape and color until the occasion, it should always be kept moist.
